The gorges of the Atacama Desert offer a unique trekking experience through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge, including a rappelling activity.
Hiking and Rappelling in Salto del Chintaguay
Picks up are available at your hotel in Pica at your chosen time, followed by a 4x4 journey to Salto del Chintaguay in the Tamarugal Pampa. The route begins with a 4x4 ascent to a hilltop for panoramic views of the Atacama Desert.
Subsequently, a medium-difficulty trek of about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) through the Salto del Chintaguay gorge will commence. The trek involves an ascent of 70 meters (230 feet) to a viewpoint where a snack consisting of an energy bar, chocolate, nuts, and fruit will be provided, along with a choice of tea or coffee.
After the break, the trek resumes along the ravine, during which visitors can see several pre-Columbian pictograms. The return to the starting point will precede the 4x4 trip back to your hotel in Pica, arriving four hours after pickup.
Add a Rappelling Experience
For those interested, adding a rappelling option is recommended. This includes the hiking route followed by a descent of 7 meters (23 feet).
After the trek, a short walk along the ravine leads to an additional rappel of 5 meters (16.5 feet). The experience concludes with viewing the pre-Columbian pictographs before returning to your hotel in Pica five hours after pickup.
