This journey to Roccagloriosa will take us to a charming village situated to the north of Monte Bulgheria, renowned for being the meeting place of the parents of the beloved comic icon, Totò, according to local lore.
Excursion to Roccagloriosa
Our adventure begins at 5 PM on Via Borgo, from where we'll depart Pisciotta, setting our course toward the southern expanse of Campania, specifically into the heart of the Cilento National Park, located between the gulfs of Salerno and Policastro.
As we journey onward, the picturesque village of Roccagloriosa emerges from its hillside perch, wrapped in breathtaking views that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Our route will take us through the northern slopes of Mount Bulgheria, a site recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look out for the splendid sight of Mount Bulirla as we travel.
Upon our arrival in Roccagloriosa, we'll embark on a leisurely walk through the village, exploring its iconic landmarks and uncovering the rich history of this remarkable locale. Intriguingly, historical records trace the beginnings of this village back to the 13th century. Yet, as we peruse the antique shop and the Civic Museum, housing a wealth of archaeological artifacts, we’ll learn that its history goes back even further.
Throughout our exploration, we'll pass by several noble palaces and share stories about the legendary Totò, celebrated as one of the greatest comedians in Italian history. Local tales suggest that his existence stemmed from the clandestine romance between his mother, Anna Clemente, and the Marquis De Curtis.
Continuing our excursion, we’ll delve into the ruins of the castle of Roccagloriosa and take the time to visit some of its historic churches.
To conclude our day, we will head back to Pisciotta, where you will be dropped off at the original meeting place by 9 PM.
