Tour Details
At the scheduled time, attendees will meet at the ruins of the Douglas C-47B Dakota aircraft to begin the guided tour of the underground Željava Air Base. The tour will start with an exploration of the interior of the aircraft before heading to the runways to reflect on the experiences of pilots during the Yugoslav wars.
The air base was constructed in the 1960s and is located in the Plješevica Mountain, on the border with Bosnia. It was designed for protection against nuclear attacks and is recognized as the largest underground air and military base in the former Yugoslavia and one of the oldest in Europe.
During the tour, participants will also explore the tunnels, which extend approximately 1.8 miles (3 kilometers), providing a glimpse into the operational life of the base until its destruction.
The activity will conclude approximately two and a half hours later at the starting point.
