Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the ruins of the Douglas C-47B Dakota aircraft to start our guided tour of the underground Željava Air Base. We will first explore the interior of the aircraft. Following this, we will head to the runways to understand the experiences of pilots during the Yugoslav wars.
Constructed in the '60s, this air base is located in the Plješevica Mountain region, on the border with Bosnia, and was built to resist nuclear attacks. It stands as the largest underground air and military base in the former Yugoslavia and one of the oldest in Europe.
During our tour, we will explore the tunnels that stretch approximately 1.8 miles (3 kilometers), gaining insight into life at the base during its operational days. Two and a half hours later, we will conclude the activity at the starting point.
