Travel back in time to one of the most tragic chapters in Italy's history with this visit to the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and hike to the highest point of Mount Vesuvius, the most notorious active volcano in Campania.
Tour Details
This tour provides insights into how the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD devastated Pompeii and Herculaneum, two prosperous cities of their time. The meeting point is at Via Roma, from where a minibus will take you to Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum, and Pompeii. Vesuvius stands over 1000 m (3280 ft) high, and upon arrival, you will embark on a walking tour to climb to the summit for views of the Gulf of Naples and Sorrento Coast.
Next, you will visit Herculaneum, where you will have time to explore the site at your own pace. You can walk the streets and observe the ancient Roman life preserved in houses, temples, and mosaics, including the forum and the mosaic in Neptune and Amphitrite's house.
After Herculaneum, proceed to the World Heritage Site of Pompeii. An audioguide in English will help you uncover the city's secrets, showcasing cobblestoned streets and iconic buildings such as the House of the Faun, the House of the Tragic Poet, and the Basilica, along with mosaics and plaster casts of the eruption's victims.
The tour concludes back at the starting point in Pompeii after an 8-hour historic journey.
