Lagoa do Fogo Hiking Tour

Lagoa do Fogo is Sao Miguel Island's primary natural attraction, offering a remarkable hiking opportunity to this volcanic lagoon.

Description

At the designated time, we will meet at João Bosco Mota Amaral Avenue in Ponta Delgada and board a minibus heading to the west side of the island. From there, we will commence our hike to the iconic Lagoa do Fogo.

The hike covers a total of 7.5 miles (12 km) leading to a lake situated in the crater of the Água de Pau volcano. Along the trail, we will pass through eucalyptus forests while discussing the region's vegetation and wildlife. Some plant species encountered may originate from locations such as New Zealand.

Midway through, we will reach a levada that extends to the edge of Lagoa do Fogo, providing stunning views of the lagoon and the village of Vila Franca do Campo with its notable islet.

The lagoon's shore offers an opportunity to rest and enjoy a picnic lunch. Following the meal, we will descend through areas of pastures and vegetation.

On our return to Ponta Delgada, we will stop at Agua D'Alto beach before concluding the tour. The entire excursion lasts approximately 7 hours.
