Tierradentro National Archaeological Park Tour
Pickup will be at 5 am at your hotel in Popayán for this full-day excursion.
We will head to Tierradentro, an important archaeological site in Cauca, stopping for breakfast in the village of Inzá along the way. This destination is significant for its anthropological and historical value.
During the park tour, we will observe evidence from three historical periods: pre-Hispanic, colonial, and republican. We'll walk among its pyramids and underground tombs known as 'hypogea', carved into volcanic rock, and view different burial chamber decorations. Some tombs reach a depth of 8 metres (26 feet).
We will learn about the Paez people who occupied this area before Spanish Colonization. After touring the tombs, we will view stone statues of indigenous idols and visit the museum displaying excavation findings.
Lunch will be served, featuring a chicken or meat dish with rice, soup, salad, 'patacones', and a drink. In the afternoon, we will explore colonial remnants at the San Andrés de Pisimbalá church, built of stone with a thatched roof.
We will return to Popayán, arriving at your hotel between 8 pm and 9 pm.
