In Quechua, Samaipata means "place of rest between mountains", a name that perfectly encapsulates this archaeological site. On our Fort Samaipata Day Trip, you'll visit one of Bolivia's favourite tourist destinations and its best vineyards.
Fort Samaipata Day Trip
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and start our day trip to the Fort and village of Samaipata. The drive will take around 2 hours 30 minutes, offering views of the mountain range known as "The Volcano".
Upon arrival, we'll take a 40-minute guided tour of the archaeological site, focusing on the pre-Columbian architecture in the ruins of the defensive, religious, and esoteric buildings. We will cover the history of Fort Samaipata, associated with the Chané, Inca, and Spanish civilizations.
Next, we'll visit the Samaipata Archaeological Museum, located 12 miles (20 kilometres) from the archaeological complex. This colonial building showcases objects found during the excavations of the fort.
At around 1 pm, we'll take a break of 1 hour 30 minutes for lunch at a local restaurant. Our return journey to Santa Cruz de la Sierra will include a photo stop at the Las Cuevas and El Chorro waterfalls.
We'll return to your hotel in Santa Cruz at around 6:30 pm.
Fort Samaipata Day Trip + Wine Route
If you'd like to enhance your day trip, you can opt for the wine route. In addition to visiting Fort Samaipata, we will also see the Landsua and Uvairenda vineyards, where you'll learn about the wine-making process and have tasting opportunities. We will conclude with lunch at the El Pueblito hotel in Samaipata, returning to Santa Cruz to arrive at your hotel by 7 pm.
