In Quechua, Samaipata means "place of rest between mountains", a name that encapsulates this archaeological site. On our Fort Samaipata Day Trip, you'll visit one of Bolivia's tourist destinations and its best vineyards.
Fort Samaipata Day Trip
At 8 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and start our day trip to the Fort and village of Samaipata. The drive will take around 2 hours 30 minutes, providing views of the mountain range known as "The Volcano".
Upon arrival, we'll take a 40-minute guided tour of the archaeological site, exploring the pre-Columbian architecture in the ruins of the defensive, religious, and esoteric buildings. We'll discuss the history of Fort Samaipata, which has belonged to the Chané, Inca, and Spanish civilizations.
After the tour, we'll visit the Samaipata Archaeological Museum, located 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the archaeological complex. This colonial building exhibits objects discovered during the excavations of the fort across six rooms.
At around 1 pm, we'll take a 1 hour 30 minutes lunch break at a local restaurant. Following lunch, we'll return to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, stopping for photos at the Las Cuevas and El Chorro waterfalls.
We'll arrive back at your hotel in Santa Cruz at around 6:30 pm.
Fort Samaipata Day Trip + Wine Route
