Description
More than 30 years ago, a volcano erupted in southeast Washington State, changing the landscape significantly. Mount Saint Helens, located 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Portland, is an important geological site. The tour starts at 523 NE 19th Avenue, from where we'll travel to Mount Saint Helens. During the journey, we will discuss the geological events characterizing this area, including the eruption of May 18, 1980.
Upon arrival, we will hike along one of the main routes at Mount Saint Helens, featuring waterfalls, lava caves, and forests. This area includes the largest lava cave in North America.
If time permits, we will visit the closest viewpoint to the volcano crater, providing insights into the stratovolcano's activity. A picnic-style lunch will be held next to Spirit Lake.
After exploring the region, we will return to Portland, stopping at a bar for drinks or snacks if desired. The day trip lasts approximately 12 hours, concluding at the original meeting point.
