Kari Kari Lagoons Hike

  • 7 Stunden - 2 Tage

Discover the Andean landscapes surrounding Potosí on this hike to the Kari Kari lagoons and the Cerro Rico hill.

Kari Kari Lagoons Hike

We will meet at 8:45 am at Ayacucho Street in Potosí to start the hiking route. A bus will take us out of the city center, where we will observe the pre-colonial architecture as we approach the mountains. Along the way, we will see the refining plants for minerals extracted from the mines.

Upon arrival, we will begin a fifteen-minute ascent to the Kari Kari lagoons: San Ildefonso, Chalviri, San Rafael, and San Pablo, built in the 16th century. Participants will enjoy views of the slopes and the famous Cerro Rico while experiencing the Andean flora and fauna. We will continue to the top of the mountain at an altitude of 5000 meters.

A break will be taken for a picnic lunch at the Apacheta viewpoint before starting the descent. We will return to the starting point, where transport will pick us up to head back to Potosí, concluding the tour at 4 pm.

Add an extra day

With this option, after reaching the top, we will have dinner and spend the night with a traditional Apacheta family, experiencing their simple lifestyle. Dinner will include soup and a main dish. The next morning, we will rise at dawn for breakfast and continue our hike to the Chaqui hot springs.

We will enjoy the therapeutic waters and have a two-course lunch before taking transport back to Potosí, arriving at approximately 3 pm.
