Tour Details
We will meet at the specified time at the Lucrino train station and set off on a walk to the Lake of Avernus, located approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the meeting point. The journey will take about 20 minutes on foot.
Upon arrival at the lake, we will discuss the two major eruptions, the first around 8000 years ago and the second around 4000 years ago, and the first Roman colonies that settled in the area in the early centuries BC.
We will explore the history of Portus Julius, the Roman port submerged in the lake, recognized as a masterpiece of engineering from the Augustan period and utilized by the military fleet.
Next, we will visit the temple of Apollo in the Grotta di Cocceio, an artificial tunnel created by the Romans to connect the lake with Cuma and the Grotta della Sibilla.
We will also view the vineyards surrounding the lake, which uphold the Campi Flegrei wine tradition.
Finally, we will return to the starting point, concluding the tour after 2 hours.
