During this excursion to Lake Avernus, participants will explore the myths, tales, and mysteries associated with this volcanic lake.

Tour Details

The adventure begins as we gather at the Lucrino train station. Once assembled, we will embark on a scenic walk towards the Lake of Avernus, situated approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the starting point. Are you prepared to unveil what was once believed to be a portal to the underworld?

After a leisurely 20-minute stroll, we will reach the lake, a body of water formed by volcanic activity, which has experienced two significant eruptions—the first around 8000 years ago and the latter around 4000 years ago. As we meander along the lakeshore, we will discuss the history of the early Roman colonies that settled in this area during the initial centuries BC.

Our exploration will also cover the intriguing story of Portus Julius, the grand Roman harbor that currently lies beneath the waters of Lake Avernus. This site is often regarded as a remarkable engineering feat from the Augustan era and served as a strategic base for the military fleet.

As we proceed, we will encounter the impressive temple of Apollo within the Grotta di Cocceio. This impressive artificial tunnel, excavated by the Romans, was designed to link the lake with Cuma and the renowned Grotta della Sibilla, which was thought to be the dwelling of the ancient prophetess.

The surrounding vineyards will also catch our eye, standing as guardians of the Campi Flegrei wine tradition.

Finally, we will retrace our steps back to the original meeting point, wrapping up our journey after approximately 2 hours.
