Discover the history and nature of Maio Island in Cape Verde with this day trip from Praia.

Maio Island Day Trip

At 5:30 am, we will pick you up at your hotel in Praia and head to the Santiago island port. There, you will need to present your ferry ticket to board the ferry to Maio Island, known for being flat and scenic.

After a 2-hour crossing, we will arrive at Porto Inglês dock in the south of Maio Island. Upon disembarking, we will visit the salt mines interpretation center, where we will learn about the salt trade's impact on the island's development, which is the sixth largest in the Cape Verde archipelago.

Next, we will pass through the towns of Morro, Calheta, and Morrinho, appreciating their crafts and landscapes. The distinctive dunes of Morrinho resemble those of the Sahara, offering a great photo opportunity.

The tour will continue to the village of Pedro Vaz for a typical Cape Verdean lunch featuring various local specialties. Following lunch, we will visit Vila do Maio, the island's capital, which includes stops at San José fortress and Our Lady of Light church.

The tour will conclude with a brief visit to Bitchirotcha Beach, the most famous beach in Maio, before returning to Porto Inglês dock for the ferry back to Santiago. We will drop you off at your hotel in Praia by 7:30 pm.
