Chiloe Island: Chacao, Ancud & Puñihuil Penguins
At 8:30 am, a departure from Puerto Varas will take us to the village of Pargua, followed by a ferry to Chacao, a village on the island of Chiloé.
From Chacao, we proceed to the Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument, home to a colony of Humboldt and Patagonian penguins. Other species, such as the red-legged cormorant and the kelp gull, may also be observed. A boat ride to view these animals is available but not included in the tour price.
The next stop is Ancud, the former capital of the island until 1982. We will visit the Regional Museum and the well-preserved Fort San Antonio to learn about the colonial history of Chiloé.
After viewing the fort, we will visit the municipal market, allowing one hour to experience local crafts and foods from the area. Various food stalls will offer a chance to sample local gastronomy.
Return to Puerto Varas is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
