Troglodyte settlements and medieval dwellings are the focal points of the guided tour of the Almagruz caves, a significant archaeological and ethnographic complex in the Granada Geopark.
Almagruz Caves Guided Tour
At your chosen time, we will meet at the car park of the interpretation centre of the Almagruz Troglodyte Habitat Complex. This area is notable for its numerous caves from both prehistoric and contemporary times. The visit will begin with an exploration of the archaeological site of the Guadix-Baza basin, where fossils of ancient European hominids have been discovered, indicating the presence of troglodyte settlements in the Almagruz caves.
The tour will cover the lives of our ancestors and the medieval modifications made to the caves in the cliffs. Participants will enter a farmhouse cave known as Cortijo Viejo Almagruz, walking through various rooms of this 16th-century structure including the kitchen, bedrooms, and courtyard, all adapted to cave living.
As we visit additional caves in Almagruz, we will learn about rural life and local culture, including cheese production, traditions such as the "matanzas," and artistic techniques involving esparto grass, wool, silk, and clay. The guided tour of the Almagruz caves lasts an hour and 15 minutes, concluding at the starting point.
