Delve into the history of one of the smallest enclaves of the Vigo estuary on this excursion to the island of San Simón from Redondela. Despite its small size, it has much to discover!

San Simón Island Excursion

We'll meet at the Cesantes pier in Redondela at the indicated time, where we'll set sail for the island of San Simón.

After a 10-minute cruise along the Vigo estuary, we'll arrive at the island. Upon disembarking, we'll pass through the main entrance and explore the history of this currently uninhabited islet.

On our 1.5-hour route around the island, we'll see the Monument to the Troubadours and learn about the monks who once lived here, who abandoned the island due to pirate attacks, including that of Sir Francis Drake.

We'll cross the bridge to the island of San Antón, which served as a lazaretto for quarantining sick individuals during outbreaks. We'll visit its cemetery and discuss how San Antón became a concentration camp during the Spanish Civil War.

After returning to San Simón, we'll learn about the legend of the lavandeira and its connection to Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The tour will continue at the back of San Simón, where we'll uncover details about Francisco Franco's decision to leave this site.

Lastly, we'll visit the Buxos forest, followed by about 1 hour of free time to take pictures and explore the information center. The excursion will conclude with a short 5-minute return crossing to the San Simón pier, ending our 2.5-hour experience in Redondela.
