El Altar Volcano 2-Day Hike

Day 1: Riobamba - El Altar Volcano

At 7 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and travel to the base of the El Altar Volcano, located at an altitude of 22,965 feet (7,000 metres). Upon arrival, we will provide a packed lunch for the hike and prepare our equipment for the 9-mile (15-kilometre) route through Sangay National Park. The ascent will feature laurel trees, royal palms, achupallas, ferns, and orchids.

After 7 hours of walking, we will set up tents for the night. At day’s end, a dinner will be served under the Andean sky.

Day 2: El Altar Volcano - Riobamba

After breakfast, we will provide a bag of food before departing for the summit. We will traverse 1 mile (2 kilometres) of rocky trails to reach the El Altar Volcano's summit at 13,451 feet (4,100 metres). From the crater, you can view the Yellow Lagoon, formed after the volcano's eruption in the 15th century. We will then drive back to the base and take a minibus to return to Riobamba, with an arrival at your hotel scheduled for 4 pm.
