2-Day Trek to El Altar Volcano
Day 1: Departure from Riobamba to El Altar Volcano
Your adventure begins at 7 am when our team will collect you from your accommodation in Riobamba, followed by a journey to the base of the El Altar Volcano, standing at an impressive 22,965 feet (7,000 meters) above sea level. Upon arrival, we will provide you with a packed lunch and prepare for the 9-mile (15-kilometer) trek that traverses the stunning Sangay National Park. As we ascend, expect to witness a variety of flora, including laurels, royal palms, achupallas, ferns, and orchids.
After approximately 7 hours of hiking, we will reach our designated campsite, where we'll set up our tents for the evening. Conclude your day with a satisfying dinner beneath the shimmering stars of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Day 2: From El Altar Volcano Back to Riobamba
Awake to a new day at the mountain's base and enjoy a delicious breakfast to energize yourself for the day's endeavors. Prior to our ascent, we will equip you with a food package for the hike.
As we navigate through 1 mile (2 kilometers) of challenging terrain, we will eventually reach the summit of El Altar Volcano, soaring to a height of 13,451 feet (4,100 meters). Within the crater, the breathtaking Yellow Lagoon awaits, a stunning formation resulting from the volcano's last eruption in the 15th century. After taking in the sights, we will make our way back to the base and board our minibus for the return trip to Riobamba. We expect to arrive at your hotel by 4 pm.
