Join us for a hiking experience to the Chimborazo Volcano Ice Mine, where you will learn about an ancient traditional profession in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Hiking to the Chimborazo Volcano Ice Mine
At 7 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Riobamba and travel to the village of Cuatro Esquinas, located at an altitude of 14,271 feet (4,350 meters). This will be the starting point for our 6-mile (10-kilometer) hike to the ice mine of the Chimborazo Volcano.
During the hike, we will explore the endemic plant life and observe the llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas in the Andean valleys, sharing informative facts about these animals.
Upon arrival at the Chimborazo ice mine, we will learn about its historical significance and the local ice workers who extracted ice blocks for sale. A picnic lunch will be provided, including a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and juice. We will then begin our return journey, with a drop-off at your hotel in Riobamba by 4:30 pm.
Ice Extraction
If you choose this option, you will attend a demonstration of ice extraction by an industry expert, learning about the historical methods and the local trade practices.
