Hiking to the Chimborazo Volcano Ice Mine
Your day will begin at 7 am with a pickup from your accommodation in Riobamba, followed by a scenic drive to the village of Cuatro Esquinas. Situated at a remarkable elevation of 14,271 feet (4,350 meters), this location marks the commencement of our hike towards the ice mine of Chimborazo Volcano.
Throughout our 6-mile (10-kilometer) hike, we'll encounter the unique flora native to this Ecuadorian region and observe the llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas that roam the picturesque valleys of the Andes. As we catch sight of these animals, engaging insights will be shared, including details about the continuous growth of vicuñas' incisors...
Upon reaching the Chimborazo ice mine, visitors are greeted by a site steeped in history, having sustained local ice workers for generations. These individuals historically extracted ice blocks for commercial distribution.
During our visit, a delightful picnic lunch will be served, featuring a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and juice to replenish our energy. After our break, we will begin our journey back, ensuring you are returned to your hotel in Riobamba by 4:30 pm.
Ice Extraction
For those interested, an option to witness a live demonstration of ice extraction by a seasoned expert is available. This session will explore the intricacies of the trade and reveal how locals once trekked considerable distances to market their ice.
