  • 3 Stunden

The Castel Sant'Angelo, or Mausoleum of Hadrian, was built between 134 and 139 AD and is a prominent landmark in Rome. An English-speaking guide will provide insights into its history.

Castel Sant'Angelo Tour

Begin by meeting your guide at the entrance to the Castel Sant'Angelo for a guided tour. The tour starts with an overview of the sculptures on the Ponte Sant’Angelo, which spans the Tiber River.

Upon entering the Castel Sant'Angelo, your expert guide will discuss the fortress's history. Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a burial site for his family, it is linked to a legend involving the Archangel Michael during the sixth century plague.

The monument is notable for its various legends associated with popes who converted it into a castle. You will explore rooms utilized by the popes, including Pope Clement VII’s bathroom adorned with Raphael’s frescoes. The tour includes a climb to the terrace for views of Vatican City, ideal for photographs.

The visit will also cover the lower floors, highlighting the secret tunnel leading to the Vatican, used by Pope Clement VII during Charles V's attack in 1527 via the “Passetto di Borgo”. This location has inspired writers, including Dan Brown in “Angels and Demons”.

The tour concludes outside the Castle.
