Roam the underbelly of Rome on this tour of the underground system. Walk the historical Appian Way and Caffarella as you dive into the lesser-known side of the Eternal City!
A City Under the City
This archeological tour invites you to uncover Rome's lesser-known and darker side underground. Historically, an underground system was used to help build the city; we will discover its hidden treasures on this tour.
Meet at the specified time next to Cancelliere Caffé to begin the exploration of the underground areas of the Appian Way and Caffarella.
This underground system, one of the largest in Rome, extends from the Aurelian Roman Wall to Via dell’Almone. We will explore a historic quarry, gaining insights into the foundational elements used in the construction of Rome.
Next, we will visit a site previously used for ancient mushroom cultivation, leading to the highlight of the tour: the catacombs of Rome, revealing how this site has been repurposed over time.
The tour continues with a visit to the reconstructed Mithraeum, the worship area beneath the Appian Way, associated with the cult of Mithras.
Returning to the surface, the tour concludes with a wine tasting, celebrating the culinary legacy of Marcus Gavius Apicius, a first-century Roman gastronomist.
After 2 hours of archeological exploration, we will conclude the activity.
