A City Under the City
This archeological tour invites you to uncover Rome's lesser-known and darker side underground. The underground system historically contributed to the city's construction; this tour reveals its hidden treasures.
Meet us at the designated time next to Cancelliere Caffé to explore the underground of the Appian Way and Caffarella and discover a hidden side of the Eternal City.
This extensive underground network extends from the Aurelian Roman Wall to Via dell’Almone. We will explore the historic quarry used for extracting construction materials, gaining insights into the foundational elements of Rome's construction.
We will proceed to a site that once hosted ancient mushroom cultivation, leading to the highlight of the tour: the catacombs of Rome. We will explore this historical area and its evolving purpose.
The tour continues with a visit to the reconstructed Mithraeum, linked to the cult of Mithras, the god of the sun.
Concluding at street level, we will enjoy a wine tasting, reminiscent of the first-century Roman gastronomist, Marcus Gavius Apicius, after 2 hours of exploration.
