On this walking tour of Pelourinho, we'll explore the African heritage in Salvador de Bahia, focusing on colonization, slavery, and liberation.
Salvador de Bahia African Culture Tour
We'll meet at 2 pm in front of the Cathedral Basilica of San Salvador for a walking tour centered on the influence of African culture in Salvador de Bahia, particularly in the Pelourinho neighborhood.
Our first stop is Terreiro de Jesus, where we will examine the colonization history through the Jesuit Missions and Portuguese colonization. This segment will also highlight notable African figures from Salvador de Bahia.
Next, we will walk to the Cross of Sao Francisco, discussing the establishment in the 19th century of a men's organization aimed at supporting the black community in their liberation efforts. We will also delve into vital aspects of African culture including samba and capoeira dances.
Finally, we will visit the Escola do Olodum, a cultural and educational center of African descent that emphasizes the significance of Carnival in the city.
After three hours, the guided tour will conclude at the Cross of San Francisco.
