African Culture Exploration in Salvador de Bahia
Our adventure begins at 2 pm outside the Cathedral Basilica of San Salvador, from where we will embark on a walking exploration to uncover the deep-rooted African influence in Salvador de Bahia, focusing on the vibrant Pelourinho district.
Our first destination is the Terreiro de Jesus, a site rich in history. Here, we will delve into the colonial legacy shaped by the Jesuit Missions and the Portuguese settlers. Additionally, we will uncover stories of notable African figures who have made significant contributions to Salvador de Bahia over the years.
As we proceed through the city center, our next stop will be the Cross of São Francisco. At this landmark, we will discuss the establishment of a men's organization in the 19th century dedicated to supporting the black community in their pursuit of liberation. Furthermore, the tour will highlight pivotal elements of African culture, such as the lively samba and capoeira dances—movements that are sure to inspire you to dance along!
To conclude our journey, we will visit the Escola do Olodum, a vibrant cultural and educational establishment celebrating African heritage. Here, we’ll reflect on the significance of Carnival in the life of the city.
After three enriching hours, we will wrap up the tour, returning to the Cross of San Francisco.
