La Carolina Trip
At 7:30 am, we will pick you up at your hotel in Potrero de los Funes to head to the northern area of the Argentine province of San Luis. After crossing the Pancanta Valley, we will arrive at La Carolina, a small village at the foot of Tomolasta Hill, named after Spanish King Carlos III. Under his reign in the 18th century, various gold mines began to be exploited in this area.
We will discuss the legends of "yellow fever" related to the quest for gold and how the Spanish transported nuggets to Chile for refining at the Santiago Mint. You will also learn about the metal extraction process by visiting an old gold mine in La Carolina. Equipped with rubber boots and lantern helmets, we will take a short, low-difficulty route through the tunnels.
After the mine visit, we will head to the outskirts of La Carolina to explore the prehistoric Inti Huasi cave, where we will learn about the lives of the first hominids that inhabited these caves.
At the end of the cave tour, we will return to La Carolina for one hour of free time for lunch. After lunch, we will return to your hotel in Potrero de los Funes, arriving at approximately 2:30 pm.
