This day excursion to Oxapampa and Chontabamba offers a unique opportunity to delve into the contributions of the Austro-German settlers who migrated to Peru during the 19th century.
Details of the Day Trip
We'll commence by collecting you from your accommodation in San Ramon at the scheduled time. Our journey will take us northwards to the province of Oxapampa, where we'll explore two significant towns.
En route, we will pause at the Mezapata viewpoint, allowing you to admire the breathtaking Paucartambo river bridge, which serves as a natural divider between the Junín and Pasco regions.
Upon reaching Chontabamba, we'll visit the town's main square along with its charming wooden church, built in the distinct Austro-German style. Here, we will discuss the historical presence of European settlers who established their communities in the Oxapampa province.
Next, we will journey to the intriguing Tunqui Cave, where you can explore a stunning array of stalactites and stalagmites within the cavern. Following this, we will visit a La Floralp dairy factory to observe the production process of various milk-based products, including cheese, butter, and yogurt.
After this, we will head to the town of Oxapampa, where you'll have some leisure time to savor the regional cuisine during lunch.
Once we've refueled, a guided tour of Oxapampa will follow, allowing us to visit notable landmarks: the Plaza de Armas, the Colonists' promenade, and the Santa Rosa church, a remarkable wooden structure influenced by Austro-German architectural styles.
Having explored the rich European heritage of these two towns, we will return to San Ramón. You can expect to be dropped off at your hotel approximately 10 to 11 hours after the initial pickup.
