With this excursion to Oxapampa and Chontabamba, you'll explore the legacy of the Austro-German settlers in Peru.
Oxapampa + Chontabamba Tour
At 8:30 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in San Ramon and travel north to the province of Oxapampa, visiting two main towns.
En route, we will stop at the Mezapata viewpoint for views of the Paucartambo river canyon, which serves as the natural border between Junín and Pasco. We will also visit a traditional sugar mill operational since the 19th century.
Upon arrival at Chontabamba, we will explore its main square and the wooden church built in Austro-German style, discussing the history of European settlers in Oxapampa.
Next, we will visit the Tunqui Cave, known for its stalactites and stalagmites, followed by a trip to a dairy factory to see how products like cheese, butter, and yogurt are made.
We will then go to Oxapampa, where you will have free time for lunch and to sample local cuisine.
Post-lunch, we will have a guided tour of Oxapampa, visiting the Plaza de Armas, Colonists' promenade, and the church of Santa Rosa, a significant structure of Austro-German architecture.
After the tour, we will return to San Ramón and drop you off at your hotel around 7 pm.
