Tour Details
At the indicated time, your guided walking tour of Sanlucar's historic centre will begin, departing from the Avenida Calzada de la Duquesa Isabel, which leads from the heart of the city down to the beach.
As you stroll down this popular avenue, you'll explore the town's history dating back to ancient times. Arriving at Plaza del Cabildo, you'll see a monument dedicated to the first circumnavigation of the Earth. This square divides the Barrio Bajo (Lower District) from the Barrio Alto (Upper District), into which the route will continue.
Wandering through the historic Plaza de San Roque and along Calle Bretones, characterized by typical Andalusian whitewashed houses, you'll reach the Covaches de Sanlucar, formerly the entrance to an ancient marketplace, featuring intricate stone carvings of mythical sea creatures. Your tour will continue up Bethlehem Hill to the Auditorio de la Merced, a former church now housing a theatre, where you'll learn about the Medina Sidonia family who commissioned its construction.
Next, you'll visit Plaza de la Paz, home to examples of Renaissance and Medieval architecture, including the Church of Nuestra Señora de la O and the Palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia. Here, you'll enjoy a tasting of Manzanilla, the local sherry, at a typical Sanlucar bodega.
At the end of your route, the ruins of the Castle of Santiago will await. Admire its defensive walls and towers as your guide shares surrounding myths and legends. The tour will conclude in approximately 2 hours.
