What is the Palmetum?

Located south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife's port, the Palmetum spans almost 30 acres (12 hectares) on an artificial hill which was formerly a landfill. It features ocean views and a diverse collection of flora, particularly palms and island plants.

The Palmetum houses the largest collection of palms in Europe with over 500 species. It is organized into various biogeographic zones, showcasing plants from the Caribbean, Hawaii, Melanesia, Australia, Madagascar, and the Canary Islands. Additionally, it features approximately 2000 different plant species from tropical and subtropical climates, alongside landscaped gardens with streams, lakes, and waterfalls. The hilltop location offers views over the Atlantic Ocean, and it serves as a habitat for wild birds, appealing to ornithologists.
