Altamira and Santillana del Mar Trip
We'll set off from Santander and head to the town of Santillana del Mar, home to the cave of Altamira. This cave is a significant Palaeolithic site, with access limited to only five people per week to ensure its preservation.
We will visit the Altamira National Museum and Research Centre to see a life-size replica of the caves. There, we will examine the cave paintings and learn about their discovery in 1868.
Afterwards, we will begin our tour of Santillana del Mar. This medieval town, referred to as "the town of three lies," is not holy (santo), lacks plains (llana), and is without a sea (mar).
The tour includes a visit to the Plaza Mayor and a stroll through the town's cobbled streets, culminating at the collegiate church of Santa Juliana. You will have one hour of free time to explore Santillana del Mar independently and appreciate the medieval architecture in its historic centre.
At the end of the tour, we'll return to Santander.
