Get to know the history of Santarém by visiting walls, military barracks, and churches on a very special tour. You will also enter its cathedral and visit the Diocesan Museum.

Santarem Guided Tour and Cathedral

We will meet up at the time of your choice in the garden of the Republic, in front of the former convent of San Francisco. From here, we will begin a guided tour on foot through the northern part of Santarém, learning all about its important moments from history.

After admiring the gothic-style façade of the Santa Clara Church, we will stroll along the barracks that played an important role in the Revolution of the Carnations. You will learn about this crucial military uprising in the history of Portugal.

We then walk to the elegant Town Hall and, at the municipal market, we will see the traditional decorative tiles, many dating back to the 18th century. Afterward, we will visit the remains of the city walls to learn about the city during the Muslim era.

We will then encounter sculpture in honor of Bernardo de Sá Nogueira and discuss why this politician is well-known. We will also stop to taste some local sweets.

The tour will conclude with a visit to the cathedral of Santarém and the Diocesan Museum, which houses more than 150 pieces of art and baroque design. Two hours after we started, we will finish the tour outside the museum.
