On this excursion, we'll learn about the history of the El Cobre Sanctuary and the Cimarrón Monument, one of the most famous monuments in southern Cuba.
Tour to Cimarrón Monument & El Cobre Sanctuary
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de Marte. From this central point in Santiago de Cuba, we'll depart in an elegant classic car towards El Cobre, which is 40 minutes away.
This municipality of colonial origin was strategically important due to its copper mines. We will first visit the Cimarrón Monument, erected in honor of the 17th-century copper mining slaves. This site is part of a UNESCO initiative aimed at highlighting the stories of those deprived of freedom and who labored in Cuba. As we ascend to the monument, we will also enjoy the surrounding natural landscapes.
Next, we'll visit the El Cobre Sanctuary, also known as the Basilica Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre. The basilica, accessed by a staircase of 254 steps, is a key religious site in southern Cuba. We will discuss the religious significance of this sanctuary, famous among Cubans. Notably, Pope Francis prayed at its altar during his official visit in 2015.
After our visit to the basilica, we will take a short walk through the town of El Cobre before returning to Santiago de Cuba in our classic car, completing the tour in approximately 4 hours.
