Description
Our guided tour of Santoña begins next to the Monument to Juan de la Cosa. This navigator and cartographer was one of the most illustrious personalities to have come from the town. You will hear all about his background and achievements as we stroll down the Paseo de Pereda, which runs parallel to the Cantabrian coast. At one end of this avenue, you will see the Fort of San Martín, significant in the Napoleonic invasions of the 19th century.
The tour continues with a walk through the historic center of Santoña, featuring audio and visuals explaining its evolution. Among the important monuments is the church of Santa María del Puerto, a 13th-century Romanesque temple at the foot of Mount Buciero.
Another landmark is the Casa Palacio del Marqués de Manzanedo, showcasing elegant 19th-century architecture. We will also explore the customs and traditions related to local celebrations, including the declared Festival of Tourist Interest <carnival.
We'll visit the Plaza de Toros bullring, near the port and the Fish Market. The final stop will be the fishing port, where we will learn about Santoña's longstanding fishing tradition and the Cantabrian anchovy. The tour concludes at the auction room within the port, where fresh fish is traded.
