Day Trip to Palaces of La Granja & Riofrío

Do you love history? On this day trip to the royal palaces of La Granja de San Ildefonso and Riofrío, you'll discover how the Spanish monarchs lived in their Segovian residences.

Day Trip Details

At the designated time, we'll meet in Plaza del Azoguejo. From this spot located at the foot of the Segovia Aqueduct, we'll head south.

After a 30-minute journey through a beautiful forest landscape, we'll reach the Royal Palace of Riofrío. This building dates back to the first half of the 18th century and was commissioned by Philip V, the first Spanish monarch from the House of Bourbon.

This mansion is surrounded by more than 600 hectares of forest, allowing the monarch to practice montería. We'll learn about this activity by visiting the Museo de la Caza (Hunting Museum), and explore the palace's main rooms featuring furniture and decorative arts of the era.

Next, we'll head to the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso. Upon arrival, you'll have 30 to 45 minutes of free time to explore its gardens and have lunch. We recommend bringing your own picnic, though bars and restaurants are available. After lunch, we'll go on a guided tour of this architectural gem, known as "the Spanish Versailles."

During the tour, we'll visit the Real Colegiate (Royal Collegiate Church), where Philip V and Elizabeth Farnese are buried. We will conclude by visiting the fountains in La Granja's gardens, including the Fountain of Neptune, the Fountain of Fame, and the Baths of Diana.

This 5.5-hour day trip will conclude with our return to the meeting point in Segovia.

This day trip is free for children under 5, provided they do not occupy a seat on the transport and travel on an adult's lap.

Please note that the fountains are not always operating, as their jets are activated on specific days in spring and summer, with fixed dates on May 30, July 25, and August 25.
