In the abandoned and demilitarised city of Cheorwon, traces of the Korean conflict are evident. This day trip from Seoul explores the area's history.
Description
The Korean War resulted in substantial collateral damage impacting both military and civilian populations, particularly in Cheorwon. Under North Korean control since 1945, Cheorwon became a significant battle site and has undergone reconstruction in the post-war years. Today, military trucks and checkpoints are common, and the historical impact is tangible.
At the scheduled time, we will meet at your chosen pickup location and proceed to the demilitarized area of Cheorwon. A memorial plaque commemorates the conflict with the phrase, "The iron horse wants to run again," which your guide will explain during the tour.
We will explore the Second Tunnel, the widest tunnel in Korea, designed for surprise attacks and discovered in 1975. We will walk approximately 3.5 kilometres (2.1 miles) along this secret invasion route.
Additionally, we will stop at the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, dedicated to commemorating conflict victims and providing views of the border area between the Koreas.
A delicious lunch featuring various vegetables will be provided. The day concludes with a visit to the observatory at the Y-shaped Hantangang Bridge, offering panoramic views of Korea's longest suspension bridge.
Finally, we will return to the pickup points in Seoul, completing this 11-13 hour tour.
