Cerro de Pasco Exploration
Your adventure begins at 10 am with a pickup from your lodging in Cerro de Pasco. Are you ready to delve into the heart of Peru's mining heritage? This city traces its origins back to the 16th century, established as a mining settlement near the then capital, Villa de Pasco.
The journey kicks off at Chaupimarca square, home to the San Miguel Arcángel church. Founded in 1827, this church is a guardian of artifacts from the colonial era. We’ll then proceed to Daniel Alcides Carrión square, where we’ll observe the notable monument honoring the scientist whose work on Carrión's disease, or the "Peruvian wart virus", played a pivotal role in battling this grave illness during the 19th century.
As we continue, we will admire a variety of structures that reflect Cerro de Pasco's mining heritage, including the renowned Casa de Piedra or 'Stone House' as well as the Villa Minera or 'Mining Village'. Before reaching the acclaimed mining site of Cerro de Pasco, we will pass other significant monuments such as the Lourdes Castle and the Pasco Column.
At the open-pit mine, affectionately referred to as "El Tajo" by locals for its striking resemblance to a cleft in the land, we will uncover the vital role Cerro de Pasco has played in the Peruvian mining sector. The area has been a source of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead since the times of colonization.
To enrich your experience, we will venture out of the city to visit Carrión's house, a replica of the home belonging to the figure known as the "martyr of Peruvian medicine". This residence is situated at the entrance of a hospital that bears his name.
We will conclude our exploration by returning to the city, with drop-off at your accommodation scheduled for 12 pm.
