Description

This expedition through the Meseta de Bombón invites you to explore the heart of the central highlands of Peru, showcasing remarkable sites like Lake Junín and the charming colonial villages of San Pedro de Pari and San Juan de Ondores.

Itinerary

Your journey commences at 9 am with a pickup from your hotel as we set off towards the breathtaking Meseta de Bombón, a vast plateau located to the east of the Andes. En route, you'll encounter picturesque colonial towns, including a brief stop in Vicco to admire its beautifully preserved 17th-century church.

Upon reaching the Junín National Reserve, which spans an impressive 53,000 hectares, you'll immerse yourself in its incredible biodiversity as we visit Lake Junín. This vibrant ecosystem is home to approximately 36 different bird species, where you may spot flamingos, the elusive Puna ibis, the Andean goose, and the endangered grebe, a unique species found in this region.

Next, we’ll head to the scenic village of San Pedro de Pari, nestled by the lakeside, where the colonial-style church stands as one of the oldest in South America, exhibiting a blend of historical and Andean architecture.

Our journey continues through San Juan de Ondores, concluding with a visit to the town of Junín. Here, you can explore the Museum of Natural History and enjoy a leisurely stroll across the main square, where notable sights include the church of San Ignacio de Loyola, the historic train station, and several quaint chapels. You’ll then have some time to enjoy lunch at your leisure.

Post-lunch, we will venture forth to the historical sanctuary of Chacamarca, a significant site that played a crucial role in Peru’s history, which will be revealed during our visit.

As we approach the village of Huayre, known as the capital of maca, you’ll discover this small community that cultivates this renowned tuber celebrated for its reputed aphrodisiac qualities. After exploring the main square, we’ll begin our return journey to Cerro de Pasco, making a notable stop at the impressive church of San Pedro de Ninacaca, constructed from stone and thatch, which remarkably retains its original roofing.

Your excursion concludes with our arrival in Cerro de Pasco, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation around 7 pm.
