Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at exit A of the MRT station at Raffles Place to start this walking tour around Chinatown. First, we'll visit the Sky Garden in CapitaSpring, the second tallest building in Singapore, for city views.
Next, we will walk to the Temple of Yueh Hai Ching, the oldest Chinese sanctuary in Singapore, founded in 1819. You can admire its carvings and masks and learn about the beliefs of the first Chinese immigrants.
Our route continues to Pekin Street, passing the patio of an old Chinese boys school and the Fuk Tak Chi Museum, a former temple dedicated to the God of Prosperity.
Next, we'll visit Thian Hock Keng, the most important Hokkien temple. It was built with materials from China, and sailors once came here to thank the Goddess of the sea. You can see a relic of Buddha's tooth and a gift from the Qing emperor.
After lunch at one of Singapore's oldest noodle houses, we will explore the traditional trades of Chinatown, visiting a tea shop, a pastry shop, and an ointment store. You'll also see murals by Yip Yew Chong, depicting daily life in the past.
