The Castelo dos Mouros was part of the defense of Lisbon during the Islamic occupation. After the Christian conquest in the 12th century by Alfonso Henriques, a medieval village was established on its grounds. Following the conflict's conclusion in the 15th century, the village and castle were abandoned until the 19th century, when King Ferdinand II initiated restoration efforts. In 1995, UNESCO recognized the historical significance, declaring Sintra a World Heritage Site.

Since the 1970s, archaeological excavations have occurred at the site, uncovering insights into the fortress's history.
