Subsequent to the Muslim-Christian wars in the 15th century, the stronghold and the village fell into disuse until the 19th century, when King Ferdinand II initiated restoration efforts. The cultural and historical significance of this region, which includes the Castelo dos Mouros, resulted in its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
