National Palace of Queluz + Gardens
The National Palace of Queluz, located in Sintra, is built in Baroque style by Peter III. It became a royal palace after his marriage to Princess Mary. The French architect Jean-Baptiste Robillion remodeled it in the style of the Palace of Versailles. For centuries, it served as the center of the Portuguese court. Today, it also serves as a residence for visiting foreign heads of state.
The gardens include fountains and mythological sculptures and demonstrate landscape harmony. Currently, they are home to the School of Equestrian Art, which received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage and the Europa Nostra Award in 2018.
