Travel back in time to the Serbian city of Niš, one of the most historic cities in the Balkans. Discover important Roman ruins, fascinating Ottoman heritage, and a Nazi Concentration Camp on this day trip from Sofia.

Nis Day Trip Itinerary

Picked up from your hotel in Sofia at 8:30 am, you'll depart northwest towards Niš, Serbia's third largest city. After a two and a half hour drive through the Balkans, you will arrive in Niš. Your first stop is the Roman ruins of Mediana, an imperial palace from the 3rd century constructed by Constantine the Great, where you can admire its exterior.

Next, visit Niš Fortress, built in the early 18th century, showcasing earlier Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval fortifications. Explore the fortress's significant buildings, including baths, a prison, and a mosque.

Continue to the Archaeological Museum and the Skull Tower (?ele Kula), constructed by the Ottomans in the early 19th century using the skulls of Serbian soldiers from the Battle of ?egar during the First Serbian Uprising.

Your tour includes a visit to Serbia's most notorious Nazi Concentration Camp, built in 1941, where over 35,000 individuals were detained. You’ll have the chance to explore the memorial museum dedicated to the camp's victims, known as Crveni Krst.

Finally, enjoy a one-hour break for lunch at a local restaurant to sample traditional delicacies. You will return to Sofia at approximately 7:30 pm.
