Travel back in time to the Serbian city of Niš, one of the most historic cities in the Balkans. Discover important Roman ruins, Ottoman heritage, and a Nazi Concentration Camp on this day trip from Sofia.
Nis Day Trip Itinerary
Pickup will be at your hotel in Sofia at 8:30 am, after which you will head northwest to Niš, the third largest city in Serbia. The drive takes approximately two and a half hours through the mountainous scenery of the Balkans.
Upon arrival in Niš, your first stop is the Roman ruins of Mediana, an imperial palace built by Constantine the Great in the 3rd century. You will admire the exterior of this important archaeological site.
Your tour continues with a visit to the Niš Fortress, an emblematic landmark rebuilt in the early 18th century over earlier fortifications. You will explore the significant buildings, including baths, a prison, and a mosque.
Next, visit the Archaeological Museum and the Skull Tower, known as ?ele Kula, which the Ottomans constructed in the 19th century using the skulls of soldiers from the Battle of ?egar.
The tour then takes you to Crveni Krst, Serbia's most notorious Nazi Concentration Camp, established in 1941, where over 35,000 people were detained during World War II. You will visit the memorial museum to learn about the camp's history.
A break of around one hour will follow for lunch at a local restaurant featuring traditional delicacies. The return to Sofia is expected by around 7:30 pm.
