Birka was Sweden's first city and an important trading centre in the Middle Ages. On this tour, you'll visit its archaeological site and see the Ansgar cross!
Birka The Viking City Trip
At the scheduled time, we'll set off from the Stockholm port to enjoy a pleasant boat ride around the islands of Lake Mälaren.
After 2 hours, we'll reach the island of Björkö, home to the archaeological site of Birka, founded by the Vikings in the 8th century and a key trading centre until the 10th century.
During the visit, we'll explore the ancient Viking village and the island. The ruins are set in a natural landscape offering views of Lake Mälaren and birches. At the top of the island, we’ll find the Ansgar cross, a monument commemorating the arrival of the first missionary in Sweden.
After the guided tour, you'll have 2 hours of free time to explore further. A visit to the museum located among the remains of Birka's buildings is recommended for insights into Viking life.
You may also stroll through the hills and enjoy the island of Björkö at your leisure. If weather permits, swimming on a small beach is possible. Near the Birka site, a restaurant is available for meals.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to Stockholm, arriving 7.5 hours after the tour starts.
