Skaftafell Ice Cave Tour & Glacier Hike

On the day of your tour, meet your guide at the Skaftafell base, where you'll be equipped with all the specialist equipment necessary to safely enjoy your activity. Once outfitted with your helmet, harness, ice pick, and crampons, your trek will begin through the Skaftafell National Park toward the Vatnajökull Glacier.

Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland and the largest in Europe outside of the Arctic, making the hike over it a truly incredible experience. Explore the uneven terrain while marveling at the various formations in the ice created by the volcanoes underneath and the constant movement of the glacier.

After the excitement of hiking over the glacier, prepare to be awestruck by the stunning natural beauty of the blue ice cave. This cave, situated beneath the glacier, features icy walls that appear in a striking blue colour due to the high pressure and lack of air.

Ice caves like this one are rare natural phenomena, formed under exceptional conditions. You'll have ample time to explore this awe-inspiring cave and experience the magic of this unique scenery.

At the end of your tour, you will return to the original departure point.

Important information

The hike included in this activity is of medium difficulty, lasting around an hour over uneven ground. It is not recommended for individuals with heart problems. For safety reasons, the tour allows 10 minutes inside the cave.If participating in this activity during winter, it is essential to wear warm, waterproof clothing and hiking boots. In summer, a raincoat is recommended. The rest of the necessary equipment (helmet, harness, ice pick, and crampons) will be provided.

How does it work?

Upon arrival at the Skaftafell base, you will meet your guide who will provide all the necessary equipment to ensure your safety during the hike and cave exploration. After a brief orientation, you will embark on the hiking portion which will lead you to the glacier. This medium-difficulty hike requires moderate physical fitness and is designed for adventure enthusiasts looking to appreciate Iceland's natural beauty.

The itinerary includes approximately an hour of hiking over the glacier, where you will encounter a variety of unique ice formations resulting from natural geological processes. After this, you will spend time marveling at the exceptional blue ice cave, taking in the captivating hues and surrounding glacier landscape.

Included: Helmets, harnesses, ice picks, crampons, guided tour.Not included: Food and drink unless specified, transportation to the meeting point.
