Discover why Old Goa is known as the Rome of the East on this guided walking tour of the city's historic centre, a place full of Catholic churches and reminders of times gone by.
Itinerary
Old Goa was once the capital of Portuguese India, and today it features several magnificent churches designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour begins at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the oldest church in the region, consecrated in 1605.
The next stop is the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, built during the Portuguese Viceroyalty of India, followed by a visit to the nearby Goa Archaeological Museum and the Kristu Kala Mandir art gallery, located in the grounds of the Church, housing an extensive collection of Christian art in the former Archbishop's Palace.
The tour continues to the Goa Cathedral, also known as Se Catedral de Santa Catarina, the largest See in Asia. Here, you can view the statue of Jesus adjacent to the impressive Portuguese-colonial-style building.
Among the historical sites included in the tour are the Gateway to the Palace of Yusuf Adil Shah, the Viceroy Arch, marking the city entrance, and the St. Cajetan Church, which offers stunning views of the Mandovi River and Divar Island, concluding your panoramic tour of the religious history of Old Goa.
