Discover why Old Goa is known as the Rome of the East on this guided walking tour of the city's historic centre, a destination featuring many Catholic churches and historical reminders.
Itinerary
Once the capital of Portuguese India, Old Goa now has several magnificent churches designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Begin your tour at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the oldest church in the region, consecrated in 1605.
The next stop will be the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, along with the nearby Goa Archaeological Museum and the Kristu Kala Mandir art gallery, which hosts an extensive collection of Christian art. The gallery is located in the old Archbishop's Palace.
You'll then visit the Goa Cathedral, or Se Catedral de Santa Catarina, which serves as the See of the Archbishop of Goa, making it the largest See in Asia. A statue of Jesus can be seen next to this impressive building.
Throughout the tour, you will also visit the Gateway to the Palace of Yusuf Adil Shah, the Viceroy Arch marking the entrance to Old Goa, and the St. Cajetan Church that offers views over the Mandovi River and Divar Island, concluding your panoramic tour of the religious history of Old Goa.
