Discover the rich history, colonial estates, and a uniquely designed church resembling a boat in this captivating tour of Tlaxco, a designated Magical Town in Tlaxcala.
Exploring Tlaxco
Between 9 am and 10 am, we will gather at a prearranged location and board a minibus heading to the heart of Tlaxco, where our walking tour will commence. Here, we will delve into the history and notable landmarks of this remarkable Magic Town.
Perched at 2500 meters (8202 feet) above sea level, Tlaxco ranks among the highest municipalities in Mexico. During our walk, we will navigate the charming streets, taking in the colonial architecture and uncovering the historical significance of the area. Are you curious about the origins of the first inhabitants? Or the pivotal role Tlaxco played during the nation’s quest for independence?
Our guided exploration will include a visit to a 17th-century hacienda, where we will have the opportunity to sample one of the town's renowned culinary delights, 'pulque'. You’ll gain insights into the production process of this traditional alcoholic beverage, derived from the fermented sap of the agave plant. Following this experience, our journey will lead us to a carpentry workshop, where we will admire intricate handcrafted items, including a wooden toy car.
We will then transition to a minibus that will transport us to the picturesque Barca de la Fe, a church designed to resemble a ship, located in the village of José María Morelos Buenavista. Here, we’ll explore the parallels and contrasts between this nautical structure and the legendary Santa Maria, which was part of Christopher Columbus's historic expedition to the Americas.
Our tour of Tlaxco will conclude with a return to the initial meeting spot between 3 pm and 4 pm.
