Private Tour of Tortosa
We begin this private tour of Tortosa at your convenience, in front of the Castillo de la Zuda Castle, which is now a Parador Nacional hotel. After learning about this 10th-century Arab fort, we proceed to the historic centre of Tortosa, exploring cobbled streets leading to the Santa María Basilica. You can visit the interior of the basilica at the end of the tour, while we discuss the secret history of its facade, overlooking the river Ebro.
The guided route continues through the old town, observing the outside of other significant monuments, such as the Reales Colegios and the Episcopal Palace. Your guide will provide insights on the Renaissance life of the city, highlighting notable buildings including the Oliver de Boteller Palace, a Gothic marvel from the 16th century.
The final portion of the tour takes place along the banks of the River Ebro, where we will reflect on the battle of Ebro during the Spanish Civil War from July to November 1938. After two and a half hours, the tour concludes with a model of the Tortosa Cathedral, illustrating how it might have appeared had the 1626 design by Martí d’Avaria been realized.
