Did you know that Tunisia is home to one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the world? Discover it on this guided tour of the historic towns of Monastir and El Jem.
Monastir & El Jem Tour Itinerary
At 8 am, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Tunis for a three-hour drive to the archaeological site of El Jem. This site features impressive Roman remains in Africa.
Your first stop will be the Amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the best preserved Roman stone ruins and the third largest amphitheatre after the Coliseum in Rome and the Verona Arena. After exploring the venue, you will learn about El Djem's history and its origins as a Carthaginian settlement. At around 1 pm, a typical lunch will be provided before proceeding to Monastir, which is located a little over an hour away.
In Monastir, the tour will begin at the Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the resting place of Tunisia's first President. You will then visit the Ribat of Monastir, an 8th-century historic fortress offering views over the Mediterranean and insights into how the seas were controlled from this location. The Ribat has also been a filming location for movies.
After the guided tour, you will head back to Tunis, concluding your tour at around 4 pm.
