Do you want to discover traditional Yucatan food? In this cooking class, we'll learn how to make delicious ancestral dishes from the pre-Colombian era in a Maya village on the outskirts of Valladolid.
Activity Details
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at X-Batun, a Maya village in Yucatan found just 10 minutes by car from Valladolid.
After being welcomed by the members of the community, we'll take part in a Maya cooking class where we'll make 5 ancestral dishes using fresh ingredients to replicate cooking from the pre-Colombian times.
The first dish will be tzotobichay, a chaya and pumpkin seed tamale. Next, we'll learn to make sikil pák, a pumpkin seed and tomato pasta. The class will continue with píbil kaa, which combines marinated chicken with sour oranges, achiote, and spices, wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in the ground. The 4th dish will be an encamisado, which involves making a tortilla filled with meat, vegetables, and other typical ingredients. Finally, we'll create a traditional Yucatan dessert using a Maya recipe with cacao, honey, cinnamon, and piloncillo.
After the dessert, the cooking class will conclude with a total duration of 3 hours.
