The history of the Venice Carnival goes far beyond the colorful and identity-hiding masks. Join us on this walking tour to learn about the medieval origins of this iconic festival.

Description

The Venice Carnival features social codes that contribute to its popularity. It is celebrated annually just before Lent, with its origins traced back to medieval times. The tour begins in front of the church of San Simeon Piccolo and includes the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro. The tour will explore the evolution of the festival from its pagan origins in the 13th century, when nobility began mingling with commoners in costume, to its rise in popularity over the centuries.

In the 18th century, the Venice Carnival reached its peak. Participants can visit an atelier of masks and Carnival costumes to learn about the history and the role of aristocrats who disguised themselves. Notable figures like Giacomo Casanova, known for his numerous affairs, played a significant role during the celebrations.

The tour will conclude with anecdotes about Casanova and other famous personalities in the historic center of Venice.
