The history of the Venice Carnival extends beyond the iconic masks. This walking tour explores the medieval origins of the festival.
Description
The Venice Carnival features a unique set of social codes, making it one of the most celebrated events globally. The festival, marked by masquerade and identity veiling, has roots tracing back to the Middle Ages. It began as a pagan festival and evolved significantly by the 13th century, when nobility began to mingle with commoners in costumes. The tour will commence in front of the church of San Simeon Piccolo and navigate through the sestieri of San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro, examining key historical events that contributed to its popularity.
The 18th century saw the Carnival reach its peak. Participants visited a mask and costume atelier to understand the background of the elaborate disguises adopted by the aristocrats wishing to protect their identities. Notably, Giacomo Casanova, a diplomat and seducer, emerged as a significant figure of the era.
Anecdotes about Casanova and other notable events will be shared as the tour concludes in the historic center of Venice.
