Stadttempel Synagogue Tour
At 10 am we'll meet in front of the Vienna Stadttempel Synagogue to begin a guided tour through the interior of the city's main Jewish temple.
We will explore the Stadttempel, also known as the Seitenstettengasse Temple, learning about various aspects of the community's life, including culture, history, and traditions.
Before entering the synagogue, we'll see the Holocaust memorial and its wall of names. Then we'll enter this historic temple, built between 1825 and 1826, located in the Jewish quarter of Vienna on Seitenstettengasse. The interior features an elliptical space topped with a classical-style dome and surrounded by a gallery with 12 Ionic columns.
The temple was constructed within a block of apartments and hidden from view from the street due to Joseph II's Edict of Tolerance, which allowed only Catholic places of worship to have facades facing public roads.
After one hour of exploring the history behind the walls of the Stadttempel, we'll conclude the tour at the entrance of the synagogue.
