Sail along the coast of São Miguel and discover the wealth of wildlife that inhabits this Azores island on this birdwatching boat tour.
Azores Marine Birdwatching Expedition
We'll meet at 8 am at the port in Vila Franca do Campo. At the dock located in the south of São Miguel Island, we'll enjoy a brief introduction to the birds of the Azores. After learning about the main bird species and their migratory flows, we'll set off on a zodiac tour along the coast of São Miguel, home to the largest colonies of birds. A naturalist guide will accompany us to help identify notable endemic birds.
During the cruise, we will see sandpipers, shearwaters, egrets, and other native species such as buzzards. We will provide high-precision binoculars for a closer view. The tour will continue to Vila Franca do Campo Islet, where you will learn to identify wagtails, known for their seasonal feather color changes.
Finally, at 11 am we'll return to the departure pier.
Bird-watching
São Miguel and the islet of Vila Franca do Campo are some of the best places in the Azores for bird watching. However, the animals are unpredictable, and the number and species of birds observed will depend on various factors such as weather and breeding seasons.
