Whaling Heritage Azores Tour
Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to start the tour centered on the history of whaling in the Azores. We will explore the evolution of this tradition and the relationship with marine creatures.
The journey begins with the Senhora de Fátima, a whaling ship from 1945, the only operational vessel from that era in the Azores. We will delve into intriguing facts about whaling and local culture.
Next, we will board a minibus to the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada, where we will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that have made the Azores a global reference. From the lookout, we will use specialized binoculars and, if fortunate, see a whale or two, gaining insight into the lookout's role and the various species observed.
To conclude, we will visit the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, established in 1957, which has interesting stories. We will also enjoy the views from this vantage point.
After a 3-hour tour enriched with the history of Azorean whaling heritage, we will return to our starting point.
