Whaling Heritage Azores Tour
Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to kick off our tour focusing on the history of whaling in the Azores, including its evolution and the appreciation of marine creatures.
The journey begins with the Senhora de Fátima, an authentic whaling ship from 1945 that is the only fully operational vessel from that era in the Azores. We will discuss intriguing facts about whaling and local culture.
Following this, we'll board a minibus to the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada, where we will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that have made the Azores a global reference in the field.
From the lookout point, we will use specialized binoculars to potentially observe whales and gain insights into the lookout's role in this task and the various mammal species seen from this vantage point.
To conclude our exploration, we'll visit the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, established in 1957, which has its own fascinating stories. Enjoy the breathtaking views from this iconic location.
Our 3-hour tour will conclude as we return to our starting point, enriched with the history of Azorean whaling heritage.
