Whaling Heritage Azores Tour
Meet us at the Vila Franca do Campo Marina to begin our tour focused on the history of whaling in the Azores. We will explore the evolution of this tradition and its significance to local culture.
The journey starts with the Senhora de Fátima, a whaling ship from 1945 that remains the only fully operational vessel from that period in the Azores. Here, we will discuss intriguing facts about local whaling culture.
Next, we will board a minibus to visit the whaling lookout, Vigia da Furada. At this site, we will learn about ancient whale-watching techniques that have made the Azores a global reference in this field.
From the lookout, we will use specialized binoculars to potentially spot whales, enhancing our understanding of the lookout's role and the various mammal species observed in the region.
To conclude our tour, we will visit the Ponta Garça Lighthouse, established in 1957, known for its rich stories and stunning views. We will complete our 3-hour tour by returning to the starting point, enriched by the history of Azorean whaling heritage.
