Walking Tour of Vila Viçosa
At the scheduled time, we'll meet on Avenida Duques de Bragança to begin our guided walking tour. We will start by visiting the Pelourinho, a marble pillar marking the entrance of the Castle of Vila Viçosa, and explore significant monuments in the area. Notable visits include the historic ramparts, the Church of Our Lady of the Conception, and ancient Roman archaeological findings.
Next, we'll proceed to the tomb of writer and poet Florbela Espanca, a pioneer of the feminist movement in Portugal. Additionally, we will cover the history of local figures such as mathematician Bento Jesus Caraça and painter Henrique Pousão.
Our 2.5-hour walking tour continues with visits to the Church of St John the Evangelist and the Convent of Chagas de Cristo. The Ducal Palace will be our highlight, where we will explore its museum and library, shedding light on its history as the residence of the last royal Portuguese dynasty.
Finally, we will explore the exterior of the Igreja dos Agostinhos church before returning to the original meeting point on Avenida Duques de Bragança.
