Nestled between the departments of Boyacá and Santander, the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary presents a captivating opportunity for nature enthusiasts. This hiking adventure invites participants to traverse its scenic trails while discovering endemic wildlife.
Iguaque Hiking Expedition
At the scheduled time, we will convene at Carrera 9 in Villa de Leyva to embark on our journey towards the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, an integral part of Colombia's national park system.
Upon our arrival, we will initiate a hiking experience spanning approximately 27.96 miles (4.5 kilometers). Over the course of about 6 hours, we will navigate through moorlands teeming with diverse wildlife, including squirrels, armadillos, rabbits, and bats. The landscape is adorned with oak trees, pine trees, mosses, lichens, orchids, ferns, and mortiños, making it a truly unique sanctuary.
During our hike, we will visit the Iguaque Lagoon, a revered aquifer for the Muisca people, which supports up to three species of woodpeckers. We will also delve into the legend of the goddess Bachué, enriching our understanding of the local culture.
Our ascent will take us to a height of 13,123 feet (4,000 meters), where we can appreciate the breathtaking vistas of this natural wonder. It promises to be an unforgettable experience!
In conclusion, we will board the minibus for our return to Villa de Leyva, arriving back at the starting point after a total of 8 hours.
