Have you ever wondered what gold mining was like in the 19th century? Join us on this excursion to the Cuesta de Miranda and La Mexicana Mine in La Rioja, where you'll uncover the secrets of gold and other precious metals found in this region.
Description
We'll pick you up from your hotel in Villa Unión at the scheduled time, and our journey will begin in an offroading vehicle, traveling along the iconic National Route 40.
This magnificent road will lead us to the winding Cuesta de Miranda. Along the way, we'll make several stops to admire the surrounding sierras from various viewpoints. After this, we'll drive to Famatina, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy lunch on your own.
Once we've re-energized, our adventure will continue along a mountain road to the Sierra de Famatina. Here, we'll admire the landscapes of the Pesebre and Ocre canyons.
Our next stop will be at La Mexicana Mine, located at an altitude of 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) above sea level. This mine was one of the primary centers for gold and silver mining in the province of La Rioja during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
During our visit, you'll gain insights into the methods used to extract precious metals and learn about the history of the cable car system that transported gold and silver to Chilecito.
After exploring La Mexicana Mine, we'll return to your Villa Unión hotel, with an estimated arrival time of 12 hours following our initial pick-up.
