Prepare to explore the stunning high Andean scenery and marvel at the magnificent geysers during this unforgettable excursion to Laguna Brava, a true gem in the La Rioja region.
Details of the Trip
Upon booking, you can choose between two exciting tour options. Both itineraries encompass pickup from your hotel in Villa Unión, travel in an off-road vehicle, and expert guidance. Keep in mind that both routes will take you through elevations spanning from 2,500 to 4,500 meters (8,200 to 14,760 feet).
Laguna Brava (8.5 Hours)
Your adventure starts at your accommodation in Villa Unión, heading north towards Vinchina. Once we arrive at Vinchina, located in the northern part of La Rioja, we will proceed through the breathtaking Quebrada de la Troya. As we reach the conclusion of this spectacular gorge, we will have the chance to view dinosaur footprints before arriving in the quaint town of Jagüé.
From Jagüé, our path continues through the Quebrada Santo Domingo. Along this route, you will see several mountain shelters that were built between 1862 and 1874, shortly after the Army of the Andes traversed the area. This journey will lead us to the Laguna Brava Provincial Reserve, a breathtaking high Andean salt lake positioned near the Argentine-Chilean frontier.
In this protected area, we will first visit the Laguna Brava Viewpoint, where you can witness diverse species such as vicuñas, guanacos, and other wildlife of the Andes. Following this, we will venture to the Golfito de los Flamencos for a close-up view of the elegant flamingos.
Before heading back to Villa Unión, we’ll make a concluding stop at Laguna Brava to see the remnants of a plane that was forced to make an emergency landing here in 1964. Prepare to hear intriguing stories surrounding this unexpected aviation incident!
Laguna Brava & Geysers (10 Hours)
If you select this extended tour, we will include an exploration of the Laguna Brava geysers as an addition to the previous itinerary. Here, you will learn about the volcanic activity as we discuss its occurrences and significance.
We will also visit a stone shelter in Laguna Brava, a historic building that once accommodated mule drivers, now serving as a viewpoint to appreciate the lagoon and the magnificent Rioja highlands.
Lastly, we will return to your hotel in Villa Unión.
